Usually the largest stress when a circular vessel or pipe
is pressurised inside or outside.
There are 3 stresses.
Radial, equal to the applied pressure at the surface.
Longitudinal, along the length of the pipe/vessel, usually
constant across the section and usually small.
Hoop, or circumferential, the largest usually and the one
used for design calculations. If you get an acceptable
hoop stress, the other 2 will normally be inconsequential.
