Why we are serially diluting the samples for
microbiological analysis?

Serial dilutions are used to determine titers, which give
us a better idea of the quantity of organism present. This
is used for bacterial antigen testing which is performed on
nasal swabs and even urines for a wide variety of organisms
including MRSA, Legionella, and Crytococcus as well as some
viruses (Influenza A and B). Once we get a qualitative
result (a simple yes or no) it is sometimes important to
get a quantitative measurement so the doctor can determine
drug dosages best for treatment.
