Explain how the height of a mountain is approximately
measured by means of thermometer readings ?
Answer Posted / sanju
The boiling point of water at the foot and at the top of the
mountain are determined by means of hypsometer, By
consulting vapour pressure tables, the atmospheric pressure
at the top and foot of the mountain can be determined ,
because the vapour pressure of a liquid at the boiling point
is equal to the atmospheric pressure. Then by applying the
rule(roughly) that the pressure decreases by one inch for
about a 900ft, rise above sea level and one inch mote for
the next 1000ft rise the height of the mountain can be
approximately determined.
