explain the procedure of kilani cyanohydrin synthesis?

Answer Posted / akash

A method for synthesis of monosaccharides.
it is a method by which the chain length of carbohydrate is
increased.
the process is based upon the addition of hcn to the
carbonyl group of aldehydes.
this reaction creates a new asymmetric carbon atom marked
by asterisk.
thus two compounds differ in conformation about newly
formed asymmetric carbon atom. these two cyanohydrins then
hydrolyse to produce carboxylic acids which are later
converted into gamma lactones or inner esters. finally
lactones are reduced to aldoses containing one carbon more
than parent sugar.
the process can be repeated and 4 isomerc d-pentoses
produced.
