1)Why Bearing used in Motor and pumps.
2) Why Mechanical seal used in Pumps.
Answer Posted / phani
Bearing means which bears something, i.e. shaft.
and bearing has to allow smooth rotation to the shaft by
reducing the friction between bearing and shaft.
Suppose that there is a pump.
for any pump that is having casing, impeller.
impeller shaft must sit in the casing. so there is a gap
between impeller shaft and casing.
but pump is pumping some liquid.
if there is no sealing between this gap, whatever may be
rotational liquid, that will enter into the pump discharge
as well as into this gap.
so we are loosing some quantity of liquid.
To avoid this leak between casing and shaft, we have to
provide some sealant. that may be mechanical seal or gland
packing which will reduces this outer leak.
like this mech seals, oil seals also there to avoid oil
leak between oil sump and shaft.
