Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is an important
cause of severe diarrhea in developing countries,
particularly among young infants .
Proximal small intestinal biopsies taken from EPEC-infected
children show bacteria adherent to the mucosal surface in
discrete, localized colonies.
