PAN stands for Permanent Account No
A 11 digit PAN have some significance. i.e If a Pan starts
from A then A stands for something. Can anybody tell me
what the charaters in the PAN whether number or alphabet
signify?

I know only the 4th Character of PAN says the Status of the
Applicant.

First of all PAN Number is a 10 digit unique number which
comprises of 5 Alpha digits then 4 numeric and last again
alpha digit.
The first three characters in PAN number are unique series
provided by the authority.
The 4th alphabet in the PAN is based on the type of
assessee i.e. either company, individual, HUF, etc etc
The 5th digit in the PAN is the assessee last name/surname
first character..say if its Somesh Chauhan, the 5th will
be 'C'.

The fourth alphabet represents the typr of assessee viz. c-
company,p-person, h-HUF, f-firm,a- aop, b-boi. the fifth
alphabet represents the surname of the person. The first
three alphabets are auto generated.
