The meaning of ghatika as a time measure or twenty-four minutes is well known throughout India.
<But the fact that it also denoted an educational institution in ancient and mediaeval Karnataka is very little known. An effort is made here to show these ghatikas flourished as centres of learning and how private individuals and public bodies gave liberal grants for their development.>
