Don’t count your chickens before they hatch means, don’t
act as though you have something before you actually have it.
For example, let’s say a person applies for a job, with a
high-paying salary, and finds out they have been hired.
They immediately go out and buy a new car, even though they
don’t currently have the money to afford the monthly
payments. They assume that with their new salary they’ll be
able to afford it.
At this point, it might be appropriate to tell them, “Don’t
to count your chickens before they hatch.” This is because
they don’t actually have the money. They are relying on
something that hasn’t yet come to pass.Supposing they were
to lose the job.The effect would be devastating.
A related proverb would be:
"Don't cross the bridge till you come to it."
