In respiration or photosynthesis reduced adenine
nucleotides like NADH or NADPH are oxidised by releasing
hydrogen. Hydrogen is split in proton and electron the
electron moves through a series of proteins with increasing
affinity, that pushes protons through a pump against a
concentration gradient. When protons are released from high
concentration to low concentration energy is released and
that is used to convert ATP from ADP by phosphorylation.
