Third generation (3G) wireless networks will offer faster
data transfer rates than current networks. The first
generation of wireless (1G) was analog cellular. The second
generation (2G) is digital cellular, featuring integrated
voice and data communications. So-called 2.5G networks
offer incremental speed increases. 3G networks will offer
dramatically improved data transfer rates, enabling new
wireless applications such as streaming media.

3G networks are an outcome of 3GPP( 3rd generation
partnership project ) group that was set up to enhance the
various features of 2G+ keeping the basic architectures
same(to reduce the cost of set up).
From the architecture point of view 3G n/w has RNC and NODE
B'sa in place of BSS and BTS as in 2.5 G.
From user point of view, enhanced data rates upto 2 Mbps that
can enable video streaming and video calling features in 3G.
