A dataset in SSRS is a container for a collection of data retrieved from a data source. The data source can be a database, XML file, or another data source supported by SSRS. There are three types of datasets: Query datasets (used to run SQL queries against a database), Dataset fields (used to create datasets based on existing fields in a dataset), and Shared datasets (created once and then shared across multiple reports).
