Carpel is a basic unit of gynoecium i.e., pistil. A carpel has ovary, style and stigma.
So, when flower is monocarpellary then, term carpel is taken equivalent to gynoecium or pistil. Further, when more than one carpel are present, it is described as a gynoecium or pistil with monocarpellary, bicarpellary condition and so on...

carpels are nothing but pistils. if one pistil is present that is monocarpellary, if many present that is multicarpellary. carpels may be free(apocarpous) or fused(syncarpous.
