There is a difference between Router and Layer3 switch

The Layer 3 switch has most routing features of router but
switch can not do something which router can do.
1. Router has different physical components. The WAN
interface is on router. Different slots and ports are in router.
Switch has only Ethernet port don't have any extra
networing port.
2. Router totaly stops broadcast.
Switch create one broadcast and multiple collision.
3. Router can connect Different LAN with different
geographical aria.
Switch cann't perform this task.
This are the basic different of switch and router.

Answer / sneha

Layer 3 switch do routing with ASIC (Application Specific
Integrated Circuit)chips , router do with
microprocessor and its associated software
also layer 3 switches are faster than routers,
coz L3 switches uses cache memory like PCs.
Layer 3 switches often cost less than traditional routers.
Designed for use within local networks, a Layer 3 switch
will typically not possess the WAN ports and wide area
network features a traditional router will always have.

difference between layer3 switch and router..

Answer / anshul

1- layer 3 switch cannot do high link WAN termination which router CAN DO..

2- L3 switch is faster then router because it maintain CEF , FIB, CAM and TCAM tables.. n router only main routing table..

3-High level IPSEC security cannot be configured on L3 switch but can be configured on ROUTER..

4-ROUTER is costlier than L3 switch and both can connect different network..

5-Router do not broadcast in network but L3 switch broadcast in the network..

layer 3 switch
you can configure the port of the layer 3 switch
layer 3 switch multicast the packets and you can create teh
Vlan on layer 3 switch
layer 3 switch very costly and fast then other switches.

router
router used for communication or (connecting)two different
networks.
router do routing and switch dont have this facility
router very costly as compared to switch its more costly
router used protocols
RIP, EIGRP, IGRP, OSPF,

AS COMPARED THESE TWO ARE COSTLY
BUT THE WORK OF THESE TWO DEVICE ARE DIFFERENT

Choose three reasons why the networking industry uses a layered model: * It facilitates systematic troubleshooting * It allows changes in one layer to occur without changing other layers * It allows changes to occur in all layers when changing one protocol * It clarifies how to do it rather than what general function to be done * It clarifies what general function is to be done rather than how to do it
