my mode of answering is :
a,b,c,d are the four persons...

b=10+a;
c=10+b;
d=10+c;

a+b+c+d is the total amount 'S'

then substituing the values in terms of A :
a+10+a+20+a+30+a+40+a
5a will be 100 , so a=20.....

which is a=(s-60)/4 as mentioned above........
