why are transformers rated in KVA and not in KW

Answer Posted / ahamadkutty

A transformer is rated in VA or kVA because the kVA is the
vector sum of Active power IR and Reactive power
IX(l-c)which a transformer can be delivered. So depending on
the connected load with active and reactive component the
power kW will be varied keeping the kVA maximm at the rated
kVA of the transformer. For a fixed voltage the current
supplied by the transformer is the maximum fixed by the
formula VA/V and maximum power by the load.
