Why do the Gamma Prime and Gamma Double Prime phases play
such an important role in promoting strength in the
superalloys?
Answer Posted / arun s. watwe
Gamma prime and gamma double prime phases are Ni3Al and
Ni3Nb in composition, respectively. These have strength
much higher than the superalloy matrix and ductility
comparable to that of the matrix. As such, these afford one
ways to have a wide range of amounts (10-70 % by volume)and
tehreby property ranges using relatively inexpensive
alloying additions. Just as important are their ability to
retain their strength upto high temperatures and to
precipitate in extremely fine sizes uniformly throughout
the matrix.
