Emf- Electro motive force. There is a standard value of emf
for each element and this is assigned with respect to
hydrogen as hydrogen emf is taken as standard which is 0.00
and other are assigned positive or negative value on the
basis whether they act as oxidising or reducing agent with
respect to hydrogen. The same is the basis of arranging
these element in the reactivity series.

EMF is the intrinsic voltage shown by an electrochemical
cell when no current flows through it.
Metals in the reactivity series are arranged in a
descending order in accordance to their standard electrode
reduction potentials w.r.t the standard hydrogen electrode
(This is the accepted IUPAC convention). In this series,
metals which are higher in position oxidise metals which
are at a relatively lower position. Therefore the former
gets reduced and the later gets oxidised.
