For backup batteries connection,which method is best? series or parallel ? ..

For battery backup,it is neccesary to connect battery in series.Because in case of series connection of batteries,
v=v1+v2+.....Vn while in case of parell connection 1/v=1/v1+1/v2+....+1/vn
