A programmable logic controller(PLC)is a electronic device
or i can say it as a controller to make program for machine
to operate in lay-man language,

Using PLC you can make machine automatic and run the machine
asper your requirement

the specific tasks.

It Operates, more like microcontrollers but the configuration are way too different. It make use of logic zero and logic one for automatic control and for complex operation, some sensors, relays, timers, counters... etc are installed as part of the process control to obtain desired outputs
