In order to distribute load on larger area ,as per the
bearing capacity of soil,width of foundation is increased
down wars in steps . This is adopted espewcially in stone
or brick masonary.

In any engineering , at ground level we do grouting, we have two options either the grouting to be finished upto ground level or if we go for raised grouting in that case we go for step foundation.
