What is meant by Chiral compounds .Give exmaples of
optically active compounds in which there are no chiral
carbon atom.
Answer / ravi
Chiral compounds are those which lack an element of
symmetry in them. Chiral carbon is the one which has four
different substituent attached to it. Molecules can be
chiral without a chiral atom such as carbon or sulfur due
to presence of an asymmetry element such as a chiral axis.
Binaphthols are good examples of such compounds.
