Why is the generator rating always in kVA and motor rating in kW?..

Answer / ranjeet

transformers are rated in kva because copper loss is due to current and iron loss is due to voltage so it is expressed in va and power factor is not know

Why is the generator rating always in kVA and motor rating in kW?..

Answer / jayesh pillai

the load on generator or transformer is not known so its
power factor is also unknown
moreover active losses occuring in transformer is very low

due to these reasons generator or transformer are having
rating in kva and motor is in kw

Why is the generator rating always in kVA and motor rating in kW?..

Answer / k.sri405

generator is a power source so the load of generator is not
known it may either inductive or resistive or capacitive.
and power factor depends on load so it is rated in kva. but
motor itself is a load so it is rated in kw.

Why is the generator rating always in kVA and motor rating in kW?..

Answer / vamsi

trf having two losses 1.copper losses depends on current and iron losses depends on voltage.so trf having unknow power factor.it depends on nature of the load i.e restive, inductive and capacitive load bt motor having fixed power factor and its doesnt depends on load.

Why is the generator rating always in kVA and motor rating in kW?..

Answer / sumit kumar

In the case of t/f eddy current loss and hysterisis loss due to current so, the rating of t/f is in kva but in case of motor loss is i^2*r so,rating in kw.

Why is the generator rating always in kVA and motor rating in kW?..

Answer / qwde

Aternator's & Xmer's power factor depend on threir loads.
So that u can not calculate KW rating at the time of
manufacturing.

Electricty is generated at around 16kV, then step up to 220kV for transmission then steped down to power transformers then DTs and then through the LT n/w it reaches the consumer end. At the consumer end 230V supply is required. So, why is electricity not generated directly at 230V and transmitted?
