Answer / guru
In a protection system due to large number of protection
relays provided for various types of faults, all the
tripping devices are connected to a master trip from where
the tripping command goes to the concerned circuit breaker.

In Several sub-stations and power houses a special type of
installations is applied i.e. generally O/C relay for B and
R phase and Earth fault relay for Y phase. From there the
three trip connections are coming out and is connected to
the master trip coil. Now this relay output is connected to
the circuit breaker. Thus the other relays works here as
slave(Not mandatory) and the later one as master controlling
the operation of the circuit breaker.

In any substation master trip relay is employed bcz it
master relay and other relays act as slave relays. Any relay
may it be O.C ,REF, Earth fault relay,Buchloz relay etc.,
will sense the faulty nature of the circuit and they will a
signal to Master trip relay then master trip relay will give
tripping command to CB.

Actually the master tripping relay is connected in
conjunction with all the abnormal conditions which are
probable to occur on the system & operates when any of the
concerned fault occurs & sending a tripping command to the
CB.In addition to this it also locks the closing circuit of
the CB so that if any personnel or external control circuit
if tries to close the CB,the CB won't close until the fault
is resolved & the relay is reset.

Master trip relay called multifunctional relay. Its analyze
power quality and fault conditions and protect power system.
This one purpose of isolating faulty power and make
continue operation in equipements(like DG and Main power
parallel opertaion). and its given analoge and digit and
communication outpus also its use for plant automation and
monitoring in closed process.

Basically master trip relay is called master coz it has the
least operating time ie;it trips first .also it works to
multiply no. of contacts..for eg.if Spam 150 C relay gives
trip contact to master trip relay ..the MTR trips with
changeover of contacts..you can use those contacts for
tripping breaker ,getting indications on DCS etc.

The tripping contacts of protection relay may not be
adequate to carry the current of tripping coil. Hence, a
seperate tripping relay is used to give tripping command to
the trip coil, called Master Trip Relay. The operating
element of the Master Trip Relay is energised through the
respective protection relay. Further, in the event of
provision of more than one number of protection relays, a
seperate relay called Master Trip Relay is provided to
receive the trip command which in turn trips the switch
gear.

generally in LT and MV motors we are using 3.5Coresx16,25,35,50 etc cable for supply.although motors is earthed at two point and having all protection.then why we are using that 1/2 core for earthing the motors.while in HT cable we are using only 3core cable for motor supply.generally lt and mv motors are delta connected and ht motors having star connection.whethere it is having any relation with winding connection( star or delta).all motors i am talking about are dol only.can anybody solve my confusion.thanks...
