Shahzad said only light answer....
We can’t measure the flow value directly.
First crate diff pressure in flow line using orifice,
annular pipe, venturi meter etc…
Then measure the diff pressure using any diff pressure
transmitter take square root get flow value.
Flow value = Sq.Root (Diff Pressure)

In a differential pressure flow meter (orifice + DP Cell), pressure is measured before the orifice and after it. This pressure difference is used to measure the flow of the liquid in the pipe. If the pressure difference is more, the flow is more and vice a versa. The problem with this method is that the pressure difference is not proportional to the flow so if the velocity (flow) of the liquid increases, the pressure increases but at a different rate. If you were to plot this on a graph you would get a curve. This curve is not much good for auto control requirements. We have to make this curve straight or linear so that we can get a linear signal from the meter. A square root extractor is used to do this.

Square Root extractor are used in Flow measurement in pipe
lines of low slurry and low viscous fluids by using Orifice,
Venturi, Annubar...
flow is measured by creating differential pressure along
those devices and taking square root extraction in either
transmitter side or in controller side.
some of the flow measurement devices like cariolis mass flow
meter, magnetic, vortex etc... which measure slurry and
highly viscous materials does not have square root extractor...

normally,output of the flow transmitter will be in square
root scale, where the control valve opreate into a linear
scale.In order to change the square root output into a
linear scale we interdouce square root extractor which will
give the linear output to opreate the final control element.

The relation between the differential pressure and the flow
is not leaner.the square root is used to linerize this
relation.u can calculate the flow of a dp flow transmitter
in % by using this simple formula (flow in %= 10(under root
of delta pressure in %)

flow is directionally proportionalto suare root of differencitial pressure
f=square root(p1 - p2)
so suare root extractor is used to solve the square root so that we could get correct flow

DP & flow relation is non linear that is why square root is
used.it actually makes this relationship linear.
Q=10 under root Dp
Q=flow is %

The pressure differential over a distance represents potential energy (like a voltage), and the kinetic energy of the flow is proportional to the square of the mean velocity of the flow
