If we put a ball(made by metal) of dia 10mm on table of
size 200 mm*200 mm . weight of ball is 10 kg(98.1N) it
should point conact with table than what is the stress
acting on table and why?

Answer / sanda
the strees at contacting point is infinet but away from
contacting point is LOAD/cross sectional area of table
(98.1/0.04=3.924 N/M^2).
It is due to the saint venent principle.

Exact mathematical geometries arent followed in real world, and this is actually not a case of point contact. Rather, the ball would depress a certain amount, and a finite small surface would be in contact. For kinematic analysis, we may assume this insignificant and assume it a point contact.

Answer / psg tech
It is a contact problem. The stress developed near contact
region is given by(if both ball and table are of same
material),
0.388*(P*E^2/R^2)^0.33
P = load
E = Youngs modulus of ball
R = radius of ball
